Dordrecht during world war two

A collection of historical items from World War II in Dordrecht.

Books and publications from the war.

Here are books and publications that were published during or shortly after the war, all related to the war history of Dordrecht.

First, we have the book by German paratrooper Walther Gericke - Fallschirmjäger hier und da. As Walther Gericke was the commander of the second battalion of Fallschirmjäger Regiment 1 during May 1940, it is not surprising that the battles for Dordrecht are mentioned in his book. It contains many interesting photos of the battle for Dordrecht. The book was published during the war.

In this Militaire Spectator, a booklet from April 1942, Second Lieutenant of Engineers J.B. Plasschaert describes his experiences during May 1940s in Dordrecht. We will follow the story as told in the booklet, with the note that some events may have had a slightly different course in reality. However, in 1942, the study of military history had not progressed as it has today:

From the first day of the war, Second Lieutenant Plasschaert established a defense with the troops assigned to him to deny the German paratroopers access to the city center. However, a Dutch counterattack to retake the German bridgehead did not materialize until May 12th when the Bicycle Infantry made an attempt under covering fire from units of the Corps Motorized Artillery. By that time, it was too late as the German bridgehead was too strong, and the Dutch attack was insufficiently coordinated. On May 13th, the lieutenant received orders to withdraw behind the Sluisbrug (lock bridge). During a fight with German tanks while attempting to retrieve an abandoned machine gun, he, along with Sergeant Major Carpenter A. van Vlierden and conscript grenadier P. Blom, became cut off from the rest of the Dutch troops. They sought refuge in the basement of the cantonment office. On May 14th, they were captured as prisoners of war along with the other two individuals.
