Dordrecht during world war two

A collection of historical items from World War II in Dordrecht.

Original negatives - May 1940.

On this page, you will find original negatives from May 1940. Below, you can see nine original negatives from World War II, taken by a German soldier who participated in the invasion of the Netherlands. Each one of them is an interesting capture. After crossing the Moerdijk Bridge, he continues his journey, capturing shots of various bridges, passing through Willemsdorp and Hotel Waterloo, the police troops barracks, and the auto wrecking yard. Finally, he crosses over the Rijksstraatweg and the Zwijndrechtse bridges, most likely heading towards Rotterdam.

In image one, two, and three, German troops can be seen driving on the Moerdijk Bridge. Image four shows Hotel Waterloo in Willemsdorp. On the far left, a piece of artillery can be seen in the ditch, with several ammunition crates in front of it. It appears to be a damaged Dutch PAG gun. Image five depicts the police troops barracks, heavily damaged by Dutch artillery and the fighting. Image six showcases the Willemsdorp auto wrecking yard, with the police troops barracks visible on the right side of the frame. Image seven displays a German vehicle on the Rijksstraatweg. To the left of the vehicle, the damaged café on Glazenstraat can be seen. Interestingly, the website Zuidfront-Holland has already published this photo. They likely have the developed version of it.

The last two photos depict the Zwijndrechtse bridges, showing the route towards Rotterdam.

The negatives below depict interesting images of the damage in Dordrecht after the May days of 1940. The war left its marks. The images clearly show that even the city center of Dordrecht suffered during the events of May 1940. The photographs bear a striking resemblance to the photo series available on the image database of the Regional Archive of Dordrecht. However, these shots are somewhat different.
