Dordrecht during world war two

A collection of historical items from World War II in Dordrecht.

The Tegelaar Kepi.

The shop of Paulus Tegelaar at Lombardstraat No 15 in Dordrecht.

On this page, you will find some kepis of the Dutch army made by the hat factory Tegelaar from Dordrecht. It is a rare maker. Tegelaar kepis are not often seen, but those who search well can still occasionally find one.

The company Tegelaar was located at Lombardstraat 15 Dordrecht and produced various types of headgear, mainly for the civilian market. However, military personnel could also have their kepis made here. During the mobilization in 1914-1918, Tegelaar manufactured military kepis, as well as during the 1930s and the mobilization of 1939. Since Dordrecht was the garrison city of the Corps of Army Maritime Engineers (Korps Pontonniers en Torpedisten), many military personnel from this corps had their kepis made at Tegelaar. Most Tegelaar kepis are kepis with a red piping, intended for military personnel in the Corps of Army Maritime Engineers. It is known from photographic material that the Tegelaar company made kepis for military personnel of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL), the infantry, the medical service, and the Corps of Army Maritime Engineers. However, it is likely that the well-known hat manufacturer from Dordrecht did not limit themselves to just these.

The Tegelaar Kepi Model 1928 - Blue piping 6th Infantry Regiment.
This kepi features two blue pipings with a silk cockade, intended for a non-commissioned officer. The regiment number 6 on the front indicates that this kepi belonged to a member of the 6th Infantry Regiment. Specifically, this kepi belonged to Sergeant Goris Leendert van der Hum. It is a Model 1928 kepi. Sergeant van der Hum served during the mobilization and May days of 1940 with the Covering Detachment Willemsdorp. This unit was partly composed of soldiers from the 6th Infantry Regiment. Van der Hum lived in Dordrecht, which likely prompted him to have his kepi made at Paulus Tegelaar in Dordrecht. You can read the complete wartime story of Sergeant van der Hum here: Sergeant Goris Leendert van der Hum.

Tegelaar Kepi Model 1928 - Red piping.
This kepi is made by the hat factory P. Tegelaar from Dordrecht. It is a kepi with red piping. The cockade is made of metal, indicating that it was for an enlisted or concscripted soldier. This kepi features a lion emblem and does not have a regiment number. Therefore, it is likely that this kepi was used by a member of the Corps of Army Maritime Engineers. The Tegelaar stamp is visible on the inside, although in this case, it is a different type of stamp than what is found on most Tegelaar kepis. There is also a number stamped on the sweatband: 157862, which purpose is unknown. Judging by the color and type of fabric, this kepi is likely an earlier fabricated model from the early 1930s.

Tegelaar Kepi Model 1928 - Red piping.
This kepi was made by the hat factory P. Tegelaar from Dordrecht. It is a kepi with two red pipings and a lion emblem. The cockade is made of metal. This indicates that it is a kepi for an enlisted man, probably from the Corps of Army Maritime Engineers. Inside the kepi, the stamp of P. Tegelaar can be seen, located at Lombardstraat 15 in Dordrecht. Additionally, this kepi has two initials in the sweatband: D.K. Unfortunately, it is unknown who the owner of this kepi was. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful kepi from a rare maker!
