On this photo of the road bridge over the Oude Maas between Zwijndrecht and Dordrecht, the marking of Fallschirmjäger Regiment 1 is clearly visible. It reads: “10–14.5 1./Fallschirm‑Jäger.Rgt.1 1940” on the bridge. This refers to the paratroopers of the 1st Battalion of Fallschirmjäger Regiment 1, who captured both bridges during the events of May 1940. In this photo, the flak emplacement where the Germans had positioned their anti‑aircraft guns is also clearly visible.
