The German paratroopers were often portrayed in Nazi Germany as glorious victors and elite units. A good example of this is the German propaganda film Sprung in den Feind — freely translated as Leap into the Enemy. Although the original operation to capture the Moerdijk bridges did not proceed flawlessly, it can historically be regarded as a German success. The paratroopers ultimately managed to seize the bridges and hold them until the armoured units arrived to relieve them. The German propaganda machine eagerly exploited this success and exaggerated it further. The photographs shown below were taken during the filming of this propaganda production. Many of these images later became so‑called “purchase photos”: pictures that were reproduced in large quantities and sold to German soldiers for their personal photo albums.
