9. White flag at River Casemate II in Willemsdorp during the Second World War.

This photograph shows the river casemate from yet another angle. What is interesting to note here is the white cloth placed in one of the firing ports. It may have been put there by the Dutch garrison during their surrender, but it is more likely that the German paratroopers placed it there themselves to indicate that the bunker was no longer occupied by Dutch troops. The photograph was therefore very likely taken shortly after the May days, or perhaps even during the fighting in May 1940.
What can be seen even more clearly here than in the other photographs is the large number of bullet impacts around the firing ports. It must have been a bitter fight for this bunker. We also see tall shrubbery, which likely did not improve the field of fire for the Dutch defenders — at least not in that direction. Finally, we see a German motorcycle. It appears that a German motorcyclist, or Kradschütze, briefly dismounted to capture this bunker on film.
