16. River Casemate I in Willemsdorp near the railway line during the Second World War..

One of the rare photographs of River Casemate I. Although River Casemate II was photographed frequently, only a few images of Casemate I are known. The crew of this casemate surrendered after a German non‑commissioned officer pressed a pistol against the stomach of the 16‑year‑old son of Mr. Huisman, who worked for the Dutch Railways. The crew knew the boy well and surrendered immediately.
On the casemate is written: Fallschirmjäger 12. Kompanie 2. Zug Pfingsten 1940 Holland.
The casemate was not captured by this company, but most likely by men of the 5th or 6th Company. The inscription was therefore probably added only for the photograph. In the right‑hand firing port the barrel of the 5 cm gun No. 2 is still visible. Immediately to the right of the casemate lies the railway line.
