3. Positions along the Oude Maas in Zwijndrecht during the Second World War

This photograph shows three German soldiers near hastily constructed positions, likely belonging to 7./IR.16, along the Oude Maas. They have a clear view of the Grote Kerk in Dordrecht. The situation appears relaxed, and it seems they are having a conversation. The photo was probably taken shortly after the May days of 1940, following the withdrawal of the Dutch army from Dordrecht. During the fighting, it would have been impossible to stand here. The man on the left, carrying an MP40, appears to be a paratrooper judging by his helmet, although the image is somewhat blurry.
