3. Abwurfbehälter are dropped near the Tweede Tol in Dordrecht during the Second World War.

In this photograph, one can see the dropping of the so‑called “Abwurfbehälter”. These were the transport containers that held the essential supplies for the paratroopers, enabling them to continue the fight. A few paratroopers are standing on the dike watching the scene. In the lower left corner, several Dutch prisoners of war can be seen; they were forced by the Germans to carry out various tasks. For example, they had to drag the Abwurfbehälter from the fields to the barracks camp and assist in caring for the wounded. Several vehicles are also visible. These were confiscated by the paratroopers. The passenger car is marked with red crosses for transporting wounded soldiers — something that occurred more often during the May days of 1940.
