Kriegsmarine in Dordrecht
During the Second World War, Dordrecht was an important city for the German army. The Germans made effective use of the city’s existing infrastructure. Schools were often used as billets or quarters, and hospitals were also taken over for military purposes. The many houses in the city provided accommodation for the large number of German soldiers stationed in and around Dordrecht. For the citizens of Dordrecht, the presence of German military personnel was therefore a familiar sight. The Kriegsmarine was no exception. The city’s many harbours, with direct access to the inland waterways, made Dordrecht an excellent base of operations for the navy’s supply vessels. As the photographic material below clearly shows, the Nieuwe Haven in Dordrecht was in any case of significant importance.
