11. German Music Corps Scheffersplein in Dordrecht

This photo belongs to a photo lot of the German general Erich Höcker. This general was assigned command of the 719th German Infantry Division on 3 May 1941, with its headquarters located in Dordrecht. On 1 June 1941 he received permanent command of the division, which he held until 10 January 1944. The photo is an interesting one. We see a German musical performance taking place on the Scheffersplein. The picture appears to have been taken from the terrace of what is now Baloe Beer. On the table lies an officer’s ceremonial dagger. In the foreground, a boy from Dordrecht is watching the spectacle — and he is not the only one. The German concert has drawn quite a crowd, and more German soldiers can be seen near the statue of Ary Scheffer. In the background, the unmistakable Vroom & Dreesmann building stands prominently. The photo was taken in early April 1942.
