Dear wife and children,
If nothing gets in the way, I will be home on 12 and 13 May, so come on 11 May. But that’s still 14 days to go. I just hope nothing interferes. The letter was already sent off, otherwise I would have written it there. Nothing is known yet about freedom of movement. Now darlings, take good care of yourselves. Greetings from father. Goodbye, until 11 May we hope. Goodbye.

(Jan van den Ende was born on 28 July 1904 in Leiden. His parents were Johan van den Ende and Neeltje Susanna Johanna Dee. On 3 October 1924, Jan, a regular conscript of the 1924 draft from Warmond, was assigned to the Regiment of Cyclists. On 1 March 1939 he was transferred to the 1st Regiment of Cyclists. On 27 May 1940 he was discharged on extended leave. He returned on 7 June 1940, and then went on extended leave again on 14 July 1940.)
