Field mail Mobilisation Dordrecht
On this page you will find military field‑post cards relating to Dordrecht and its surroundings.
It is hard to imagine now, but there was a time when telephones were certainly not as widely available as they are today. Let alone that it was possible to exchange messages at any moment. The telephones that did exist were usually located in central places and were mostly intended for business conversations. For mobilised soldiers there was therefore no other option than to send cards home. They did so in the form of field post. At first, the soldier’s family could still address their cards to the specific location where he was stationed, but during the general mobilisation the soldier’s destination became secret. Instead, one wrote to a designated field post office, which ensured the card reached the correct unit. Both the family and the soldier could send military field post to each other. In the upper right corner one wrote the word ‘Militair’, and then no stamp was required. Sometimes field post was stamped with the text: ‘Do not write about military matters!
