Poster – Day of Remembrance for the Fallen
This poster is an official announcement sheet from August 1945, drafted shortly after the end of the Second World War. It announces a day of remembrance for the fallen in Sliedrecht. At the top appears a black cross, underscoring the mourning character of the day, followed by the title in large, bold letters.
The text describes in detail how the day will proceed: the ringing of the church bells in the morning, the request for residents to fly the flag at half‑mast, the ceremony at the town hall with the raising of the flag, the singing of the Wilhelmus, a speech, the laying of wreaths, and a minute of silence marked by sirens. Afterwards, a procession is formed that proceeds to the cemetery for a walk past the graves and further wreath‑laying. Later in the day, the bells ring again and a memorial service is held in the Dutch Reformed Church, which is also broadcast elsewhere through loudspeakers.
At the bottom it states that family members, representatives of institutions, churches, and associations are invited to attend, and that employers are requested to give employees time off as much as possible. The poster was issued by the Community of Former Illegal Workers and printed by A. G. de Waard in Sliedrecht.
