'Kribbekist' (foot locker) F.J. van den Doel
Below you see the “Kribbekist” or foot locker of Torpedist Ferdinandus Johannis van den Doel. Ferdinandus was born on December 4, 1903 in Nieuwe Tonge. He worked as a ship’s mate in inland shipping. Ferdinandus was called up for military service on February 3, 1923, as a regular conscript from the 1923 draft from Nieuwe Tonge. His registry number was 124. On September 1, 1939, he was voluntarily enlisted in the ranks of the Volunteer Landstorm Corps Ship Service. He served here during May 1940, but it is unknown where. On July 15, 1940, he was honorably discharged as a volunteer and administratively assigned to the Corps of Pontonniers and Torpedists.
The “kribbekist” was usually placed at the foot of the bed or under the bed and was intended for the barrack room in the barracks. For troops and non-commissioned officers, the gabion boxes were generally of a standard model and usually painted black or green. This gabion box is approximately 57 cm long, 33 cm wide, and 28 cm high. It is a similar model to the gabion box of W. van Vuurde.
