6. Tegelaar Kepi Model 1928 - Blue Piping
This kepi was made by the Paulus Tegelaar company from Dordrecht. It is a kepi with two blue pipings. The kepi features a metal cockade, meaning it was intended for a soldier in an Infantry Regiment (or Engineers). Inside the kepi, a stamp from P. Tegelaar can be seen. Unfortunately, the kepi has been severely damaged by moths, which is always a risk with the type of wool fabric used in its construction. While it has been significantly affected, the damage has actually made it possible to see how the kepi was made. The base of the kepi is essentially made of stiff cardboard, covered with wool fabric. The upper edge consists of two parts: the lower section is lined with cord, while the upper section has a metal lining. Inside the sweatband, the words “Dutch manufacture” are printed. It is likely that standing in the rain for prolonged periods wasn’t ideal for preserving the kepi. This particular case illustrates just how important it is to store kepis in good condition, once moths get to them, the damage can be significant. Nonetheless, this kepi has earned its place in our collection.
